Pompano Beach

The annual Pompano Beach Seafood Festival takes full advantage of Pompano's oceanfront setting and is held directly on the beach at the end of April each year. The festival features fresh local seafood prepared in a variety of ways by area restaurants, plus continuous musical entertainment, arts and crafts and a children's play area. This two-day event, which is fun for the entire family, attracts nearly 100,000 people. More than 50 charities benefit from the proceeds of the Seafood Festival.

One of the highlights of the festival weekend is the spectacular sinking of a derelict freighter as an artificial reef by the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo. More than 20 vessels and other approved materials have been sunk to date to create new underwater habitat for fish and marine life.

The Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo is South Florida's largest saltwater fishing tournament held annually the second full weekend of May. The tournament offers more than $100,000 in cash and prizes to be won in numerous categories by boat teams, junior anglers, female anglers, and family fishing teams. The tournament also features a billfish release division and the popular drift fishing division. More than 250 boats and 600 fishermen participate annually in the nationally recognized fishing event.

Another fabulous yearly boating event set in Pompano Beach is the Holiday Boat Parade, the nation's oldest boat parade. Nearly 100 glittering yachts and smaller boats delight the thousands of people who watch from the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway beginning at Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach north to Deerfield Beach. This boat parade is a special way of getting in the holiday spirit, South Florida style.

For those who prefer a more passive approach, Pompano Beach is the place to be when it comes to sports. Football fans can watch the Miami Dolphins host the NFL's best. For baseball fans, the Florida Marlins call nearby Dolphin Stadium home. Hockey and basketball fans are just minutes from the home arenas of the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers. If its action you’re looking for, the Pompano Harness Track is a sure bet.

Pompano Beach is home to an excellent parks and recreation department and features many parks and facilities such as Community Park, the Municipal Tennis Center and Golf Course, the Civic Center/Amphitheater, Mitchell/Moore Park and McNair Park. Residents can also take advantage of two pools and a beautiful public beach.

Pompano Beach residents who hold membership with the Palm Aire Country Club can take full advantage of the amenities offered, such as the two superbly designed 18-hole courses, excellent tennis courts, junior Olympic-sized heated pool and fitness facility and then end the day at the club’s elegant dining room. The two golf courses—The Lakes and The Champions, designed by architects Joe Lee and Dick Wilson, respectively—have been ranked by Golfweek magazine as one of the top courses in the state of Florida.

For residents and guests who are looking to try their luck with Lady Luck herself, Pompano Beach is also the home to the Isle Casino & Racing at Pompano Park. Opened in 2006, the Isle Casino is a two-story, 157,000-square-foot casino complete with 1,500 Las Vegas-styled slot machines and a harness racetrack. Although there are no table games at this casino, there is a 34-table poker room available for guests.

There are many historic buildings and sites within the municipal limits of Pompano Beach. The Ely House is the former home of Blanche and Joseph Ely, local educational and civic pioneers within the Pompano Beach community. It is now a museum featuring artifacts and documents relating to the Ely’s and education in the community. Other historical sites include the First United Methodist Church, built in 1934; Kester Cottages located in Founders Park and built on the beach during the 1930s; the Old Pompano Fire Station; and the Sample-McDougald House, which was build in 1916 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
